A Guide to Hedge Plants

If you are considering having hedge plants around your home, you are going to want to learn a bit more about them first and how they grow best, so that you can have the most success and the most gorgeous looking hedge plants.

What They Are

Some hedges are purely decorative while others serve primarily as a practical function, and this is the first thing you are going to want to decide on before you go ahead and try to grow any hedge plants.

You may want to have some of these plants to give your yard privacy, or perhaps you would rather just have a few lining the walkway to your home. Either way this is going to be an important decision because these plants vary in size and shape so you will need to figure out what their purpose will be before you can decide on the plants.

Planting

Once you have decided on the purpose for your hedge plants you will be able to start planting. There are a few tools and materials that you are going to need here, and this includes a shovel, rope or string, scissors, tape measure, stakes, soil conditioner or compost, hammer or rubber mallet, and work gloves.

Planting hedge plants is really quite simple. You want to start by making a bed for the plants. This can be whatever shape you want, but the important thing is that you make sure it is going to be large enough. If you are going to be planting a few of these plants alongside one another then you will have to make a larger bed, while if you are planning them all separately they can obviously then be smaller.

Then you need to start work on the trench. Keep in mind that the rule of thumb for planting shrubs is that the hole should measure twice the width of the shrub’s rootball but not as deep. By doing this you will be providing the roots with plenty of room to expand, because the last thing you want is for the roots to not have enough room to grow because then the plant will die.

As long as you take the proper steps in planting the hedge plants they should turn out beautifully, and the best thing of all is that you can have them for years to come. They do not need much sunlight throughout the day but you will need to make sure that you water them frequently.
